The fifty portraits in Heroes: A Tribute pay homage to some of the first victims of AIDS and AIDS-related diseases, such brilliant creative figures such as Robert Mapplethorpe, Keith Haring, John Duka, Tina Chow, Klaus Nomi, Halston, and Angelo Donghia — innovative pioneers who come from the worlds of art, design, film, and dance and whose contributions are being lost to a younger generation. For Heroes, Meyer blended new and old techniques ranging from papier-mâché to computer-generated collage to create small-scaled sculptural portraits, each different.  Meyer did extensive research for each portrait prowling through books and newspaper archives to bring each portrait to life. “This is how each portrait evolved,” he says. “I immersed myself in their life.” states Meyer. The book includes biographies of each figure, most of them obituaries as published by The New York Times, Los Angeles Times, and other newspapers and will have essays by notable writers drawn from the worlds of the arts and design.

Heroes will be available in three editions: “blue”, “pink” and “collector”. All volumes will be stamped, signed and numbered by the artist, and the “blue” and “pink” editions will include a stand-alone single print of a 51st-hero that will contain a distinctive single collage element (each print to be signed and numbered as well). Every “collector” edition will have a slipcase and the stand-alone 51st-hero prints from the “blue” and “pink” editions with different collage elements applied to them.
